Basketball Player Previews: Josh Schuler

August 9, 2011

Overview: Schuler came in as a redshirt Freshman and immediately played more than 30 minutes per game. The Urbana, Ohio native started all 34 games he played in, averaging a respectable 8.8 ppg. The first team All-stater from Ohio was somehow only offered by the Sioux, but I think he’ll end up making some of the smaller D1 schools in Ohio regret that they didn’t give him a look.

What he does well: Schuler doesn’t commit a lot of fouls (1.6 per 40, 39th fewest in the country), which can either be a product of very good or very bad defense. He takes care of the ball well as well (13.2% turnover rate), a rare trait for a Freshman, even if he wasn’t handling the ball a lot (16.7% possessions used).

What he doesn’t do well: As of yet, Schuler isn’t a great shooter. He shot just under 35% from three and 43% from two, both of which are numbers he’ll have to improve upon going forward. He’s also the worst rebounder on the team, with a .8% offensive rebound percentage and 6.1% defensive.

Season outlook: Schuler has all the tools to become an upper eschelon type player in the GWC, and this season will go a long way towards determining whether he will be that kind of player or not. I expect him to start every game again (and hopefully improve his shooting percentages.)
